Bellydancing

by lightshadow @ 01.07.2008 - 22:59:11

A few weeks ago I decided to take up bellydancing lessons. My best friend started doing them a while back and somehow managed to get me to come along with her. She also does pole dancing, but that's too much effort for me! LOL! And before anyone says anything pole dancing is actually a form of fitness now and not necessarily sexy or tarty and anyone can do it! All shapes and sizes. It's just not for me. I'm too accident prone and will probably end up landing on my head and knocking myself out! :))

Actually bellydancing is great, but it's much harder than it looks. You have to isolate parts of your body while you move others and you have to really concentrate on moving certain stomach muscles, you wouldn't normally use. Everyone has their own reasons for doing these things. Mine is to improve my self confidence and to help me feel a bit more feminine. I'm such a tom boy usually and was never a girly girl, so sometimes I like to make a concious effort to change that. It seems to be working. Already i've noticed an improvement in my posture and my bum & tum muscles are more toned. I'm even wearing skirts more without caring what everyone thinks, whereas you'd usually see me in a pair of jeans whatever the weather.

The great thing about bellydancing is that it is for women of all backgrounds, shapes and ages. My teacher said she taught an 80 year old woman once. I'm hoping to get good enough to take part in a show in October. There's two other ladies, one in her 40s and the other in her 30s plus another girl who's probably a couple of years younger than me and my friend in our class. So quite a mix of girls. I think everyone should try it!

I have been belly dancing for just over 7 months!!
And love it to pieces!!!
Our class has about 20 people in it and as you have mentioned the ages do vary greatly!!! I aspire to be like the advanced class that takes place before mine, as they are truly amazing!!!
And I am hoping to get into the dance troupe myself as they do shows and even get booked for weddings!!!
I do it as I have always wanted to learn how to.
I find that the isolation of certain areas is quite tricky as it feels odd!! But I get really excited about going to the next lesson as soon as the last lesson has ended!!!

It makes a fabulous conversation piece and it is quite easy to practice whilst at work!! Although I have been caught a few times and the looks you get are hilarious!!!

Have you looked at the fabulous clothes that you can get?
What dance are you practising for the show?
have you heard about the get togethers that they have (can't remember the correct name for them) or about the weekend of dance that they hold?

Happy belly dancing!!!!

Yes my teacher has a display of outfits on a rack that she sells at discount prices. They are georgous costumes and I've already picked out mine. It's a pale pink one. I love the beads and detail. I'm just waiting for the funds to buy it as they are still very expensive. We're working on a dance with Egyptian influences that my teacher has coreographed. Tho i'm still learning the basics and i've got to practice my arm and hand positions, i'm still not quite sure what to do with them!

I haven't heard about these get togethers, do u know anything about them? I might do a bit of searching on the internet! Do you have a costume yet? If I had one, i'd prob wear it around the house and belly dance all day!!! LOL!

I have a lesson tonight so will ask about it then? Bit of a jelly brain so have forgotten when and where etc? All I can recall is there is a weekender taking place sometime in September in the West of the country. They have dances, feasts and plenty of shopping, that bit I can remember!!!lol!!

Have a coin belt, veil (as did the veil dance last term), but still not sure what costume I want!! So many to choose from (plus trying to lose little bit more weight. But do have a skirt which is black with silver sequins!! As wanting silver/gold, black and purple in my costume!!!
We tend to learn more of the egyptian dances and like your teacher ours does her own dances too!!

Just between me and you!! I do wear the skirt and belt round house. It makes you feel fantastic!! lol

God knows what the neighbours think!! Had my music blaring out the other night and was dancing about in my gear and completely forgot that I'd left the curtains open!! Caught them looking too!!pmsl
